The adverse environmental impacts of rising atmospheric greenhouse concentrations and persistent waste accumulation are driving the demand for sustainable approaches to clean energy production and waste recycling. Proposed alternative energy vectors, such as hydrogen, are still derived from fossil resources causing emissions, and an energy transition will not be possible until truly ‘green’ production methods are developed and adopted. Meanwhile, billions of tons of solid waste are discarded every year, producing toxic effects when released to the wider environment or generating greenhouse emissions when incinerated or landfilled. Sunlight-driven reforming emerges as a unifying and lucrative solution to address these challenges by integrating the thermodynamically favourable oxidation of waste-derived organic carbon streams with reduction reactions suitable for producing clean hydrogen or converting carbon-dioxide (from flue gas or via direct-air capture) to fuels. With appropriate light harvesting, catalyst design, device configurations and waste pre-treatment strategies, a range of sustainable fuels and industrially-relevant chemicals can be selectively produced from diverse waste feedstocks with high production rates, closely approaching the thresholds and metrics required for commercial adoption. This talk will summarise our recent progress towards the conception, design, development and the identification of deployment scenarios of efficient solar reforming technologies and processes to realise sunlight-powered circular industries in the future.
