Recycling and material regeneration of spent lithium-ion batterymaterials | Yue Yang

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely utilized in electric vehicles, and energy storage field. Undoubtedly, a large amount of spent LIBs would be produced. Considering the resource sustainability and environmental protection, recycling of spent LIBs has been attracted great attention all over the world. Firstly, this presentation will demonstrate the hydrometallurgical recycling of spent LIBs, including physical separation method, element extraction and material regeneration. Then, the repair technology with short process for spent LIBs materials will also be introduced. Finally, the future development of LIBs recycling technology is expected to be prospected. Through these studies, it is hoped that a closed-loop system for recycling and material regeneration of spent LIBs materials can be constructed to achieve sustainable recycling.

This presentation is part of the Power-to-X for a Sustainable Future Workshop 2025, taking place on 14–16 September 2025 at the Montien Hotel Surawong, Bangkok, Thailand. The Power-to-X initiative is supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
